Lance Canfield has turned his attention to the cockpit, designing two new mountain bike stems for Trail/Enduro and Downhill. The Special Blend Stems are precision CNC machined from 7075 series aluminum billet, available in a 35mm clamp diameter only.
Better known for its Trail, Enduro and Downhill frames such as the Tilt, Lithium, Balance and Jedi, Canfield Bikes is also in the business of componentry, spec’ing their complete bikes with a host of in-house manufactured Cranksets, Bottom Brackets, Seat Post Clamps, Pedals and more. Joining that line up are the Canfield Special Blend Trail/Enduro and DH Stems which will be spec’d on Canfield Bikes going forward, and also available aftermarket.
The Canfield Special Blend Trail/Enduro Stem gets a 10mm rise and a 40mm reach with a 42mm stack height, and is available in a 35mm clamp diameter only. This one weighs a claimed 170g with bolts. Meanwhile, the Canfield Special Blend Direct-Mount DH Stem features a 17mm rise and a 45mm length, also 35mm clamp only. It weighs a claimed 161g with bolts.
Both Canfield stems feature laser-etched graphics depicting the Canfield Bikes logo, plus torque recommendations to aid correct installation. Lance, a Red Bull Rampage competitor of the early 2000s, recalls cutting his knee to the bone on a sharp-edged stem during one ill-fated ride down the cliffs. As a result, he made sure the design lacked any such sharp edges, resulting in two stems with beveled edges and rounded corners.
“Like all of our products, I wanted them to be strong and perform well first and foremost,” says Canfield. “And I wanted them to look good, but performance and functionality are always my top priorities.”
