The Tour de Romandie in Switzerland is a classic warm-up race for the Tour de France, with past winners including Chris Froome, Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins and Cadel Evans. The 2023 men’s edition starts on Tuesday 25th April and runs until Sunday 30th April.
Taking riders through the French-speaking Romandy region in the west of Switzerland, which includes the cantons of Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel and Vaud as well as parts of Bern, Fribourg and Valais, there is usually a healthy amount of hard climbing and good time-trial action for the Swiss specialists.
This year’s route has a prologue and a time-trial and climaxes with a stage to Thyon 2000 that takes in 4,345m of elevation gain. Favourites for the 2023 race include both Yates brothers, Bora-Hansgrohe’s Sergio Higuita, Bahrain Victorious’s Gino Mäder and Egan Bernal.

Tour de Romandie 2023 route
Tour de Romandie 2023: stage by stage
Prologue: Tuesday 25th April, Le Bouveret – Le Bouveret, 6.82km
Tour de Romandie
Now this is a prologue. 6.8km, 14m elevation and just three corners. Put the power down and and never let up, my money’s on Marcel Kittel.
Stage 1: Wednesday 26th April, Crissier – Vallée de Joux, 170.9km
Tour de Romandie
Just over 2,500m of elevation gain takes the peloton over a few softeners to drop the big lads before finishing flat on the plateau by the scenic Lac de Joux.
Stage 2: Thursday 27th April, Morteau – La Chaux-de-Fonds, 162.7km
Tour de Romandie
On Thursday riders enter the watchmaking region, but this one isn’t a time-trial. It starts in France and takes in six climbs that add up to almost 3,200m of climbing. Given the lack of selectiveness in the previous stages, a breakaway probably won’t survive and a select group will fight for the stage and probably jersey.
Stage 3: Friday 28th April, Châtel-Saint-Denis – Châtel-Saint-Denis, 18.75km, TT
Tour de Romandie
Just under 19km with just under 400m of elevation, it’s a bump, and it should be enough for the climbers who struggle in TTs to shed time.
Stage 4: Saturday 29th April, Sion – Thyon 2000, 161.6km
Tour de Romandie
The big boy. The start is not actually that far from the finish but up and down the valley they go twice before finishing on top of Thyon 2000. It’s 4,345m of climbing in total over 161.6km. Ouch.
Stage 5: Sunday 30th April, Vufflens-La-Ville – Genève, 170.8km
Tour de Romandie
And if the queen stage wasn’t enough, there’s still over 2,500m elevation to contest on the final day before the peloton heads along the lake to its final destination in Geneva.
